Fumigation
Fumigation, often referred to as “tenting,” is a highly effective method for eliminating pests that have infested hard-to-reach areas of a structure. It involves enclosing the entire building in a specially sealed tarp and introducing a fumigant gas that penetrates all spaces, including walls, subfloors, attics, and in-between voids; places traditional treatments cannot reach.
In California, where the climate supports many persistent pests, fumigation is incredibly common. Each year, nearly 100,000 homes and businesses across the state are fumigated to address pest infestations that cannot be eradicated by local or spot treatments.

Why Choose X Pest Defense for Fumigation?
Fumigation vs. Other Methods:
California recognizes two official full-structure treatment methods for drywood termites:
Fumigation (tenting) – Chemical-based, reaches everywhere in the structure
Heat Treatment – Uses elevated temperatures to kill pests, but has serious limitations
Fumigation remains the gold standard for whole-structure eradication, especially when the extent of infestation is unknown or pests are embedded deep within framing materials.
When Is Fumigation Necessary?
Fumigation isn’t always the first line of defense, but it’s the most effective and reliable solution for protecting your property. Here's when fumigation becomes necessary:
The Infestation Is Extensive or Has Spread Throughout the Structure
When termites have taken hold in multiple areas of a building, spot treatments often can't reach or eliminate the full infestation.Pests Are Located in Inaccessible Areas
Structural pests frequently nest deep within the framing, subfloors, attics, or behind walls. Areas that are difficult or impossible to reach with localized treatments. Vikane® gas fumigation penetrates every part of the structure, including hard-to-access spaces, to eliminate pests where they hide.Local Treatments Have Failed or Are Insufficient
If you've already attempted spot or localized treatments and pests keep returning, it's a strong sign the infestation is more widespread than it appears. Fumigation provides a whole-structure solution that eliminates hidden infestations and prevents reinfestation from untreated areas.
